Even superheros need downtime. It’s just simply not possible to go 100 miles an hour each and every day – even if you love what you do! Unfortunately, we’re often moving so fast from one appointment to the next or one task to another that we ignore the signs that it’s time to pause. Here are 3 simple signs it’s time for you to take a break.
1. You find yourself forgetting appointments
The calendar is not foolproof. You may know you have to do something and forget exactly what it is or find yourself failing to prepare for meetings you forgot you were having the next day. When you’re due for some downtime though, you might be less clear on your commitments and start missing some important dates and deadlines.
2. You are late….A lot.
We all know that person who is always late for everything. They are constantly rushing into a meeting 5 or 10 minutes after it’s supposed to start or meeting you for lunch later than you planned. They’re always apologetic (“Sorry I’m late, I…..). Occasional tardiness happens to everyone but always being late is either a choice or a symptom of something much bigger. If you find yourself constantly apologizing for being late then you either need to get better at managing your time (perhaps you don’t allow enough time for travel) or you need to remove some things from your calendar.
3. You have trouble focusing.
Have you ever had that feeling where you sit at your computer and just stare at it, or you are not sure what you should do next, or you go into the next room and forget why? These are all signs that you’re having trouble focusing and that you need some rest. No need to feel any guilt. Rest is something everyone needs and requires. If you continue to operate after your body starts to signal a need to slow down eventually your body will go into breakdown and you won’t be able to do the things that bring you a sense of meaning, joy, and contribution.
The key here is to listen to your body and look for signs. What signs do you notice when it’s time for some down time?
